Av 5784 POC Well Circle

Our POC Well Circle is inspired by the new moon ritual of Rosh Chodesh — a time to gather, set intentions for the month, and connect.

Details

This Av, we welcome you to a Well Circle for those who identify as people of color. This is a POC sacred space to connect, reflect, and set powerful intentions together.

At The Well’s Well Circles are inspired by the Jewish ritual of Rosh Chodesh — an ancient tradition of gathering and holding space together on each new moon.

At The Well events are for those 18 years old and beyond who identify as women or nonbinary. We strive to be an inclusive environment for women and nonbinary folks of all races, classes, abilities, life stages, religious affiliations, sexual orientations, and gender expressions. This particular event is only for those who identify as people of color.

Why is this event for people of color (POC) only? We know that many spaces in our society are overwhelmingly white, and sometimes a POC-only space can be an affirming and strengthening experience. White allies, thanks for understanding the need for this POC space. Have a question? Contact yael@atthewellproject.com.

Together we will...

Reset: Get grounded in the spiritual energy of the month, guided by our thoughtful facilitator.

Reflect: Gain insight into how the themes of the month are shaping your life and the month ahead.

Transform: Take time with an affinity space to be seen and heard with love.

This space will be facilitated by Dammara Markowitz. You can learn more about Dammara on At The Well’s website.

With special co-host Haftam Yizhak Heathwood (learn more about Haftam below).

Haftam Yizhak Heathwood's remarkable journey began in the midst of the Ethiopian civil war, famine, and turmoil. Born into these dire circumstances, her life took an unexpected turn at the age of 3 when her family was forced to flee their home village, Gondar, in search of safety. Their refuge became Israel, where they settled as refugees in the tranquil Northern Israeli city of Beit She’an.

Haftam graduated from high school in 2005 and then went on to complete her compulsory military service. She served two years in the Israeli Defense Forces’ medical unit. In 2011, a new chapter beckoned, and she embarked on a journey across the Atlantic to New York City. There, she began her American adventure as an au pair, caring for children as a dedicated nanny. She had always wanted to live and work in the United States ever since she was a little girl, and working as an au pair was a pathway to be able to get to the US.

Her profound love for children and unwavering commitment to helping others ignited her involvement in various non-profit organizations. She is a valued board member of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York and actively participates in organizations such as Be’chol Lashon, JCC Harlem, JFREJ, and the Jews of Color Initiative, where she recently completed a fellowship.

Currently, Haftam has returned to the world of academia, attending City College, where she is passionately pursuing a double major in Childhood Education and Psychology. Her journey, from Ethiopia to Israel, and now to New York City, is a testament to her resilience, dedication, and unyielding commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of children and her community.
